Our Story

Planted by hand. Farmed the right way.

Some of our clearest memories are from the farm — planting seedlings on my parents' land, waiting years to see what grew, learning that good food takes time and care. Those memories are why this orchard exists.

We farm to build something lasting. Every season, we improve soil health, keep habitat for pollinators, and grow without synthetic inputs — not because a certification requires it, but because this is land we intend to hand down.

Our kids run barefoot through this orchard. That's the bar we hold ourselves to. If it's not good enough for them to play in, it's not good enough to grow food in.

We're Sacramento's first farm shipping fresh chestnuts direct to households and restaurants across the country — harvested and packed the same week. No warehouse, no cold storage, no middleman.

How We Ship

The week the nuts start falling,
we start shipping.

As soon as harvest begins — usually September — we pack and ship across the U.S. within 48 hours of picking. No warehouse. No cold storage. No sitting around waiting for demand. You get them the week they come off the tree, the way they're supposed to taste.

Chestnut orchard at The Dusty Nut — simple farming, no shortcuts, Sacramento California
How We Do It

Simple farming. No shortcuts.

01

Planted and tended the right way

We chose varieties bred for California's climate — larger, sweeter, easier to peel. The kind worth growing and worth eating.

02

Harvested and shipped within 48 hours

The nuts go straight from the ground to the box to you. No warehouse, no cold storage, no sitting around. When we pick, we ship — same week, every time.

03

Regenerative organic farming

We're pursuing Regenerative Organic Certification. No synthetic pesticides, no synthetic fertilizers. Chestnut trees are perennials — you take care of the land or you don't have a farm.

04

Retail and wholesale welcome

We sell to households, gift buyers, restaurants, and specialty grocers. Contact us for wholesale pricing and quantities before harvest opens each fall.

Questions

Things people ask us.

Can I buy fresh chestnuts online and have them shipped?

+
Yes. We ship farm-fresh chestnuts direct from Sacramento, California nationwide. We harvest and pack within 48 hours — no cold storage, no warehouse. West Coast: 1–2 days. East Coast: 3–4 days. Join our waitlist to be notified when harvest opens each fall.

When is chestnut harvest season?

+
Our harvest season runs September through November. Waitlist members are notified the week harvest begins — usually early September.

How much do fresh chestnuts cost?

+
Retail pricing is approximately $12–$18 per pound depending on size and order quantity. Wholesale and bulk pricing is available for larger orders.

Do you offer wholesale or bulk chestnuts for restaurants?

+
Yes. We supply restaurants, specialty grocers, and food businesses each harvest season. Join the waitlist and mention you're a wholesale buyer, or email us at hello@thedustynut.com to discuss pricing and quantities.

How do I roast fresh chestnuts?

+
Score an X into the flat side of each chestnut. Roast at 425°F for 20–25 minutes until shells curl back. Or use a dry cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat for 15–20 minutes. Peel while still warm — fresh chestnuts peel far easier than dried ones.

How do I store fresh chestnuts?

+
Refrigerate in a mesh or paper bag for 2–4 weeks. Freeze raw (scored) for 3–4 months, or roast, peel, and freeze for 4–6 months. Don't leave at room temperature for more than a few days.

What's the difference between fresh and dried chestnuts?

+
Fresh chestnuts are creamy, starchy, and naturally sweet. Most grocery store chestnuts are imported months earlier, dried or processed — a completely different product. Farm-fresh means harvested and shipped within days.

Are chestnuts gluten-free?

+
Yes. Chestnuts are naturally gluten-free and low in fat — nutritionally more like a whole grain than a typical nut. Chestnut flour is also a popular gluten-free baking ingredient.

Are your chestnuts organic?

+
We're pursuing Regenerative Organic Certification — the highest standard in sustainable agriculture. We don't use synthetic pesticides or fertilizers on our Sacramento farm.
